Un barrilete para el Día de Muertos / A Kite for the Day of the Dead

El 1 de noviembre de cada año, la gente tanto de Santiago Sacatepéquez como de Sumpango, Guatemala, crea barriletes gigantes durante el Día de Muertos, donde se exhiben obras artísticas y muy creativas hechas por talentosos artesanos. Los Barriletes Gigantes son un espectáculo digno de admirarse. Esta tradición cultural de Guatemala no es solo una exhibición artística a través de la fabricación de cometas, sino que también es una forma ancestral de mantener la conexión con nuestros antepasados.

Según la creencia maya, los barriletes son una forma de enviar mensajes de paz, bienestar y amor a quienes ya no están aquí.  

Acompáñanos en este taller virtual, impartido por la artista binacional Jackie Amézquita, donde los participantes harán un pequeño barrilete mientras aprenden sobre las diferentes tradiciones del Día de Muertos en Guatemala.

On November 1st of every year, the people of both Santiago Sacatepéquez, and Sumpango, Guatemala, put together giant kites to fly or show during the Day of the Dead, where artistic and very creative works of artisans are exhibited. The Giant Kites (Barriletes Gigantes) are a sight to be seen. This cultural tradition of Guatemala is not only an artistic exhibition through the manufacture of kites, but it is also an ancient way to maintain the connection with our ancestors. According to Mayan belief, kites are a way to communicate with the spirits of their loved ones.  

With the help of bi-national artist Jackie Amézquita, participants will make a small kite and learn about the different traditions of Day of the Death in Guatemala.

Jackie Amézquita es una artista latinoamericana radicada en Los Ángeles, California. Amézquita nació en Quetzaltenango, Guatemala y emigró a los Estados Unidos en 2003. Tiene una licenciatura en Bellas Artes de ArtCenter College of Design y una licenciatura en Comunicaciones Visuales de Los Angeles Valley College. Es candidata a Maestría en Bellas Artes en el programa New Genres de la Universidad de California, Los Ángeles (2022).

Jackie Amézquita is a Latin-American artist based in Los Angeles, California. Amézquita was born in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, and migrated to the United States in 2003. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from ArtCenter College of Design and an Associate degree in Visual Communications from Los Angeles Valley College. She is a Master of Fine Arts candidate in the New Genres program at the University of California, Los Angeles (2022).
